How Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing works and why it's right for you.

In traditional therapy, your life challenge - even your life - is picked apart year by year and detail by detail. But EMDR's process - and the results - are rapid.

EMDR allows your brain to enter a state similar to REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement) while you are awake. EMDR bypasses the intellectual defenses of the brain and allows your mind to relax and release the pain, often within moments. You'll move beyond the emotional roadblocks of fear or anxiety, for example, to cope with upsetting incidents on a conscious level, rather than simply reacting to their consequences.

The Power of Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a method to quiet the mind. Buddhist monks have used it for centuries. Therapists were introduced to its effectiveness when a psychologist, Marsha Linehan, discovered how to teach clients to regulate their out-of-control emotions.

With mindfulness, we teach you to pay attention to only one moment: Now. Without thoughts of past and future, you discover that the one time there is no stress in life is in the now.

Next time you eat a sandwich pay attention to each bite, each flavor, and see if you don't start to hear the sound of your chewing as well. Practicing mindfulness leads to letting go of the judging we do about our feelings and ourselves.

St. Charles Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT, attacks the problem of emotional reactivity. Many people find their problems are compounded by a tendency to feel emotions so intensely that they cannot maintain their best judgement. They seek to solve problems, but as things go wrong in marriage or parenting or work, they are easily thrown into high distress. "I feel like I'm going to pieces." "I can't bear it one more time." DBT focuses on the reactivity and teaches ways to regulate that emotion. This opens up many possibilites for changing what looked unchangeable before.
